Groom Makeup in Chennai — The Complete Guide for 2026 Weddings
Niranjana

Hey, I'm Niranjana

This is a 8-min coffee break — take it at your pace. Everything you'll read here comes from working with 10,000+ brides in Chennai. DM me on WhatsApp anytime if it sparks a question.

Walk through any Chennai wedding photo album and count the photos. About half of them have the groom in the frame. He is in the Muhurtham photos, the family-group photos, the kashi yatra photos, the reception photos, the post-Muhurtham couple-portraits, the cocktail photos. He is in every single video frame the cinematographer captures.

Yet 8 out of 10 Chennai grooms skip professional makeup entirely. The result is wedding albums where the bride looks photograph-perfect and the groom looks like he showed up to work in a sherwani — shiny T-zone, undefined beard, tired eyes from the previous night, and a five-o-clock-shadow visible by 9 PM. Sixteen years from now, those photos are what hang in the family living room.

After 10 years of doing bridal makeup, I started offering dedicated groom services in 2022 — and the demand has tripled every year since. Here is the complete guide.

## What is groom makeup, exactly?

Groom makeup is **not** "lipstick and eye shadow for men". It is a 4-step grooming + photo-prep protocol designed so the groom looks polished in 4K wedding photos without ever looking like he is wearing makeup.

The four steps:

1. **Skin prep + brow grooming** — exfoliating cleanse, hydration, eyebrow shaping (no waxing, just precise threading), nose-hair + ear-hair tidy
2. **Beard sculpting** — trim to a specific length set by face shape, edge-up with a precise jawline, beard oil for shine + softness
3. **Tinted base + photo prep** — a near-skin-tone tinted moisturiser to even out the complexion, under-eye lightening for tired-eye correction, mattifying primer on the T-zone to kill 12 hours of sweat-shine
4. **Setting + final polish** — translucent setting powder under flash, a clear-lip balm so lips do not look chapped in close-ups, brow grooming gel to set the eyebrows

The whole process takes 45 minutes — significantly shorter than the bride's 2-hour session, so the groom can be makeup-ready early and the day's timing works around the bride's longer prep.

## Why most Chennai grooms skip it (and why they shouldn't)

The three reasons grooms tell us they didn't book:

### "It's for women"

Forty years ago, this was true. In 2026, every Bollywood + Tollywood + Kollywood actor uses a dedicated groom-day artist. Every cricketer at his wedding photo session uses one. Every celebrity bride's groom uses one. The shift has already happened in the public-figure category — and is now mainstreaming.

In our 2025 wedding season alone, we did groom makeup for IT professionals from Velachery, a doctor from Anna Nagar, a film-industry technician from Saligramam, and an NRI returning from Singapore. None of them said "this felt weird" after seeing the photos. Several said they wished they had booked it for their engagement too.

### "My wedding is South Indian / traditional / not a glam wedding"

This is the most common objection — and it is based on a misunderstanding of what groom makeup is. The intent is **not** to make the groom look glam. The intent is to make him look like the best photographic version of himself.

For a traditional Tamil Muhurtham, the groom-makeup look is intentionally near-invisible: tinted moisturiser matched to his exact skin tone, neutral mattifier, beard-edge-up, brow grooming. The photos show him looking like a slightly better-rested, slightly-more-defined version of himself. Nobody comments on the makeup because there isn't visible makeup. They comment that he looks good.

### "It's too expensive"

Groom makeup with Niranjana is ₹5,000–₹7,000 — about a quarter of what the bride spends. In the context of a Chennai wedding budget that typically runs ₹8–20 lakhs total, the groom-makeup line item is around 0.05% of the wedding cost. For half the photo album, that ratio is hard to justify skipping.

## What groom makeup actually costs in Chennai

| Service | What's included | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| **Muhurtham morning** | Skin prep, beard sculpt, photo-prep base, 8-hour wear | ₹5,000–₹6,000 |
| **+ Reception evening** | Refresh + evening-look adjustment + new brow setting | +₹3,000 |
| **+ Engagement / pre-wedding shoot** | Same protocol, 6-hour wear | ₹4,000–₹5,000 |
| **Combined bride + groom** | Same artist, same morning, simultaneous prep | -₹2,000 off both |

If the bride and groom book together, both artists arrive at the bride's home in the morning (the groom-prep is typically done in a separate room) and the morning is choreographed so both are camera-ready 30 minutes before the photoshoot starts.

## The 4-week groom prep timeline

Just like the bride, the groom's wedding-day skin is built over the 4 weeks leading up to the wedding — not the morning of.

### 4 weeks out
- **Switch to a face wash + moisturiser routine** if you haven't already. Recommended: gentle gel cleanser morning + night, light moisturiser, SPF 30 daytime.
- **Stop trying new products** — no new beard oils, no "first time using a face mask" experiments. The skin needs to be predictable on the wedding day.
- **Schedule a haircut** for 14 days before the wedding — long enough for the cut to settle, short enough that it is still photo-ready.

### 2 weeks out
- **Final haircut** + first beard-shape consultation. If your beard needs to grow out for the wedding-day look, this is the last shaping before the wedding.
- **Eyebrow threading** if needed (most Chennai men benefit from a discreet uni-brow + outer-stray clean-up — invisible after, but the photos read sharper).
- **No facials in the last 7 days** — same rule as the bride. Inflammation shows up under tinted base.

### 1 week out
- **7-8 hours sleep daily** — the highest-impact variable for under-eye area.
- **Hydration** — 3 litres water daily.
- **Cut the alcohol** if you are a regular drinker. Even 2 days of dry skin / puffy eyes from a bachelor party will show in 4K close-ups.
- **Final beard shape + edge-up** 2 days before the wedding (NOT the morning of — beard needs to settle 24 hours).

### Wedding morning
- **Wake up early enough** for 45 minutes of unhurried groom prep. For a 5 AM Muhurtham, prep starts at 3:30 AM in the same room or adjacent to where the bride is.

## What about beard styling specifically?

Beard styling is the single highest-impact step in groom makeup. Five sub-rules from 10 years of observation:

1. **Face shape determines beard length.** Round-face grooms benefit from a longer beard that extends the jawline visually. Square-face grooms benefit from a shorter, softer beard that doesn't compete with the jaw geometry.
2. **Trim 5 days before the wedding, never on the morning of.** A morning-of trim leaves visible micro-cuts and bumpy texture that the photos pick up. Five days is the sweet spot for settled growth.
3. **Beard oil, not gel.** Gel makes the beard look stiff and synthetic in photos. A few drops of beard oil 30 minutes before the photoshoot creates natural shine without "wet hair gel" texture.
4. **The edge-up matters more than the length.** A precise edge from the sideburn to the chin is what makes a beard look professional vs neglected. We do the edge-up with a straight-razor + safety razor combo for crisp lines.
5. **Match the moustache to the beard density.** A thin moustache + thick beard looks unbalanced. The moustache should be 70-90% the density of the beard for visual harmony.

## Common groom-makeup questions

### "Will the makeup come off if I sweat / kiss the bride / wear a heavy turban?"

The photo-prep base we use is designed for 8-hour wear with heavy sweat resistance. Turbans + sherwanis trap heat against the forehead, which is exactly the surface we mattify hardest. Kissing the bride is fine — the tinted base does not transfer onto her makeup. By 8 PM at the reception, a quick blot + powder refresh keeps it photographing clean for another 4 hours.

### "Will my parents / relatives think it's weird?"

Most parents do not realise their son is wearing makeup until you tell them. The look is photo-prep tinted, not glam-look colour. After the photos come out, the most common parent reaction is "you look so refreshed in the photos!" — they assume good sleep, not makeup.

### "Can the same artist do my makeup and my bride's?"

Yes. Niranjana personally does the bride. A senior team member with groom-specific training does the groom in a parallel session. Same kit standard, same product quality, same 4K-photo testing. The combined bride+groom session saves logistics + delivers consistent photo finish across both sides of the couple.

### "What if I have acne or a recent breakout?"

We work with breakout-stressed skin frequently — wedding stress + diet changes commonly cause it. The protocol shifts to a clarifying cleanse + spot-concealing tinted base + green-undertone neutralisation so the redness doesn't show in photos. We never recommend trying anti-acne actives in the wedding week — the breakout has to be managed at the surface, not chemically corrected last-minute.

### "I'm getting married in 6 weeks. Is that enough time?"

Yes. The 4-week skin prep is plenty of runway. Book the trial 10 days before the wedding so we know your skin, beard density, and look preference before the wedding morning.
